When it comes to busy times of year, the Christmas season has to be the busiest. Retail stores traditionally depend on this time of year to get out of the “red” and into the “black” (hence “black friday”). Traffic seems to get heavier ever day as we approach Thanksgiving and doesn’t lessen until January. There are Christmas musicals, live nativities, concerts, and candle light services. Between my wife and I, there are only a few times until the week of Christmas when we will be home at the same time. With her working retail and me at a church, it doesn’t get any busier than now for us. Just because we have busy schedules does not mean that we have to let our schedules dictate our relationship.

evening routine
Every night, I sit on the couch with laptop on my lap and remote in my hand. I watch the shows on the DVR, catch up on FaceBook, do a little Farmville farming, check all the stats for my websites, tweet a few times, and eventually get so tired that I start falling asleep on the couch. It’s become a routine for me to head to bed only when I feel like I can’t keep my eyes open any longer. It’s no wonder I am tired every day when you look at my evening routine.

service
Serving others is something I get stuck on. It’s not that I don’t want to serve other or that I don’t do it, but that I often feel like I don’t have the time to do enough. I see friends who work “normal” jobs that use their free time to serve others either through the church or outside of the church.
This past Saturday was Compassion Day. Compassion Day happens a couple times of year and is when the leadership at North Way encourages the congregation to go out and help people in our city. One of my Ironmen groups discussed a little about how we shouldn’t have to be told by the church to go help people, but it’s something that is not on the forefront of most people’s minds.

trick or treat
I heard this week that Halloween has become one of the biggest holidays in America, second only to Christmas. What is the big deal about October 31 that gets everyone so hyped up? Sure, there’s a ton of candy, but there is more to this time of year than carving pumpkins and dressing up in costumes.
So what is Halloween all about?

a good night sleep

I think I have some sort of sleeping problem. I either have a tough time sleeping when I should be, like right now, or I want to fall asleep at less than appropriate times, like the middle of a meeting or when I’m actually trying to read a book. I know I should just go to bed earlier, but what’s the point if I’ll just lay awake. I just wish I had a regular sleep pattern.
finding balance
In many premarital classes, the topic of how we think as opposite sexes comes up. Men are often compared to waffles or egg cartons and women to spaghetti or a pile of yarn. The point is that men tend to think in compartments and think through everything being interconnected.
Lately I’ve been noticing my waffle brain becoming more of a waffle life. Continue Reading…
5 months
Are You testing me or am I just under attack? I’ve been fine for 5 months and now I’m hit with reminders. I can’t go a day without thinking about the past. My attention is drawn to the moments I hated and how I am recreating those moments for my kids. Everyone deals with it differently. My method is just moving on right away, but I continue to be drawn back by my family because they have different methods.
I don’t even understand what I feel when I hear that my son is afraid that I am sick and am going to die like his pappap. Continue Reading…
character
Father, I want to be known by Your character. Your ways are not my ways, nor are they the ways of the world. Unfortunately, my ways tend to lean more towards those of the world rather than Your ways. I am sadly nothing more than a mirror smeared with black paint, reflecting a distorted view of Your character most of the time.
too busy to tweet
Sometimes there is so much going on that even the little things that had seemingly become a constant part of your life can be put on hold. Take twitter for example… Over the past week, I have tweeted only 8 times as opposed to the previous week when I tweeted 12 times and 22 times the week before that. It’s not that I had less to say, I was just too busy to share my thoughts with the world.
Not updating twitter is not a huge deal. It’s not even a big deal when I don’t post to my blog for nearly two weeks. What is a big deal is when the busyness of life and work get in the way of your time with God. Continue Reading…
desires
I’ve been told in the past that God places certain desires in our hearts. Although I have not come across Scripture to back that up, it is something I can agree with. I don’t think a desire to become a missionary or pastor come from within ourselves, but through the guidance of The Spirit in our relationship with God.
Sometimes it might feel like our desires may never be fulfilled though. It maybe that those desires are from ourselves instead of God, we might not be ready for the fulfillment of our desires, or maybe our attitude is off the mark and God is just waiting for us to focus on Him rather than the desires He put in our heart.
